Rat Poison in Canada: Baits, Bait Stations & What the Label Allows

Looking for rat poison in Canada? Rat poisons, called rodenticides, come as bait blocks, chunx, soft baits and pellets. The right one depends on who will use it, where the rats are, and how big the problem is. This page explains your options and links to the products we ship across Canada.

Types of rat poison

  • Bait blocks and chunx – firm, weather-resistant blocks that lock onto rods inside a bait station. The most common choice for barns, garages and building perimeters. See rodent bait blocks.
  • Soft baits – very palatable paste-like baits, useful where rats have plenty of other food. See soft bait rodenticides.
  • Pellets and place packs – pre-measured packs for hard-to-reach spots, used under the label's conditions.

Active ingredients, in plain terms

  • First-generation anticoagulants (e.g. diphacinone, as in Tomcat All-Weather Bait Chunx): rats usually need to feed over several days.
  • Second-generation anticoagulants (e.g. bromadiolone in Hawk, brodifacoum in Jaguar, difethialone): a lethal dose can be eaten in one feeding; restricted to commercial and agricultural users in Canada.
  • Non-anticoagulants (e.g. bromethalin): a different mode of action, often used in bait rotation.

Who can use rat poison in Canada?

In Canada, every rodenticide is registered by Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA), and its label is the law. Products for domestic (homeowner) use must come ready to use in tamper-resistant bait stations, while the strongest single-feed anticoagulants (brodifacoum, bromadiolone and difethialone) are labelled for commercial or agricultural use only. Some provinces, including British Columbia and Quebec, add their own rules. See our Canadian label and regulation guide and provincial regulations.

Always use a bait station

Lockable rat bait stations keep bait away from children, pets and wildlife, protect it from weather, and make checking easy. Place them along walls, near burrows and entry points, and check them regularly.

Prefer not to use poison?

Rat snap traps are poison-free and work well for a few rats, especially indoors where a poisoned rat could die inside a wall.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy rat poison online in Canada?

Yes. Domestic rodenticides can be bought by homeowners. Commercial and agricultural products are labelled for those users only, so read the label of each product before ordering.

What is the strongest rat poison in Canada?

Second-generation anticoagulants such as brodifacoum, bromadiolone and difethialone can deliver a lethal dose in one feeding. In Canada they are restricted to commercial and agricultural labels, and some provinces restrict them further.

Is rat poison safe around pets?

No rodenticide is safe for pets to eat. Always place bait inside a tamper-resistant bait station, follow the label, and contact a veterinarian immediately if you think a pet has eaten bait.

How long does rat poison take to work?

It depends on the active ingredient. Anticoagulants typically take several days after a lethal dose; the product label and manufacturer documentation give the details.
