Rodent Control for Farms & Barns in Canada

Rats and mice eat and contaminate feed, damage insulation and wiring, and can spread disease to livestock. A good farm rodent control program combines sanitation, exclusion and a planned baiting or trapping routine.

Build a baiting program

  • Perimeter stations – place lockable bait stations around barns and feed storage, along walls and near burrows.
  • Bulk bait – value packs and pails keep costs down for large sites.
  • Rotation – rotating between active ingredients with different modes of action can help where bait acceptance drops.
  • Records – number your stations and log checks and bait use.

Sanitation and exclusion

Store feed in sealed bins, clean up spills, keep vegetation trimmed around buildings, and repair gaps in walls and doors.

Labels and agricultural use

In Canada, every rodenticide is registered by Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA), and its label is the law. Products for domestic (homeowner) use must come ready to use in tamper-resistant bait stations, while the strongest single-feed anticoagulants (brodifacoum, bromadiolone and difethialone) are labelled for commercial or agricultural use only. Some provinces, including British Columbia and Quebec, add their own rules. See our Canadian label and regulation guide and provincial regulations.

Many agricultural labels list specific buildings and structures where bait may be used. Check that your site is listed before ordering.

Moles and burrowing pests

Frequently asked questions

What is the best rat bait for barns?

Weather-resistant bait blocks or chunx in lockable stations are the most common choice. Pick a product whose Canadian label covers agricultural buildings.

How many bait stations does a barn need?

It depends on the building size and activity; labels and good practice call for stations along walls at regular intervals, closer together for mice than for rats.

Do I need a licence for farm rodenticides?

Some commercial and agricultural products and some provinces require certification or permits. Check the label and your province's rules before buying.
